Dental coach Andy McDougall from Spot On Business Planning poses the following question:

“Five frogs are sitting on a log and four decide to jump off, how many are left sitting on the log?

“Five; because there’s a huge difference between deciding to jump off and actually taking the plunge.”

A true decision is evidenced by the fact you have taken action. The greatest barriers to progress are inertia, failure to implement and inaction.

So, if the greatest cause of lack of progress is failure to act, what could be the reasons that prevent people taking action?

One reason could be fear of making the wrong decision. Or maybe it’s not being able to cope with the knock-on effect these changes deliver.

Knowhow is an intriguing phrase. To Andy McDougall it means knowing ‘what’ to do and knowing ‘how’ to do it. Understanding your dental business is crucial, and discovering where results can radically improve equally so, but there is no point figuring out what needs to change if you aren’t going to see it through to completion.

Be the agent of change

A key skill of a leader is the courage and determination to follow through for the benefit of the business. To be the agent of change.

Another key skill of a great leader is knowing that you don’t need to have all the answers; more important is to be able to ask the right questions of others and of yourself. Sometimes you need to ask for help to pinpoint and deliver the changes that will transform your dental business into the one you always wanted.

The difference between extraordinary and ordinary is that word ‘extra’. Maybe it’s time to obtain that extra help you need. Is that a decision you will follow through on?
